This study analyzes the continuities and transformations in the social representations of artificial intelligence (ai) through a comparison of two studies conducted in 2021 and 2024, using the word association technique with samples of university students and graduates from Argentina. It explores the meanings associated with ai, its representational structure, and potential variations in the evaluation and distribution of these meanings according to sociodemographic factors. Descriptive, prototypical, and correlational analyses were conducted. The results show a shift in the conceptualization of ai: in 2021, the representation was dominated by the notion of “robot”, whereas in 2024, the central term was “technology”, suggesting a shift from an anthropomorphized representation towards a more instrumental view. Correlational analyses indicate that, in 2021, AI was primarily associated with concepts related to computing and science, while in 2024, more diverse groupings emerged, integrating both promises and risks related to its everyday use. In evaluative terms, both samples showed predominantly positive attitudes, though marked by an ambivalence that links technological advancement with both progress and social risks. This study provides evidence of how social representations evolve in response to emerging technologies, giving rise to complex and ambivalent representational objects.
