This paper analyzes how contemporary religious movements recreate historical pasts and ancient religious traditions within new organizational and cosmological frameworks, which can be regarded as a cultural critique of modernity they experience as historical subjects. From an anthropological standpoint, I explore the cases of Lithuanian Neo-Paganism, on the one hand, and the Brazilian Cult of Santo Daime, on the other. In doing so, key elements of their religious imagination, condensed in rituals, myths, and social organization are identified, expressing a quite creative re-invention of traditions. I argue that the latter imply complex, symbolic reconstructions of time and space in which new visions of the old play a key cultural and political role
