This article explores a paradox that characterizes fin-de-siècle visual culture: the emergence of new optical technologies promised greater clarity and objectivity but they simultaneously gave rise to an aesthetics of erasure. The discussion foregrounds the hybridity between art and science and the configuration of a regime of hypervisibility characteristic of modernity.
