What is historiography? Is it simply a history of history or should it give an account of the epistemological procedures of the historian? When in 1970 Michel de Certeau pointed out that history is historiography and that it is the death of the other that defines the birth of the historian, the old positivist ghosts of the profession, carefully hidden for a long time, woke up. Here we will investigate the reception of the Certalian concept of “historiography” throughout a series of works that start from 1970 with a series of definitions that Certeau provides on the occasion of a debate with Pierre Nora and Raoul Girardet entitled “History and structure”, then, a panoramic perspective on L’Absent de l’histoire (1973) and, finally, a reading of “The writing of history” (1975) from its material conditions of production, its reception in France and abroad at the time of its publication and the way in which Michel de Certeau also used it to build An intellectual profile in public space.
