This article examines the historical development of May Day commemorations in southern Patagonia during the early twentieth century, focusing on a transborder territory incorporating the actual southernmost part of Argentina and Chile. In a context defined by weak state presence and the control of private capital, May Day celebrations are analyzed as a key component in the sociocultural making of the regional working class. Drawing on archival records, workers’ and commercial press, and specialized historiography, the study reconstructs the forms these commemorations took at different stages of the local labor movement, emphasizing their internationalism, their confrontational dimensions, and their tensions with nation-building processes. The article proposes a three-stage periodization—prior to 1917, the cycle of labor radicalization between 1917 and 1922, and the subsequent period—demonstrating how May Day functioned as a privileged space for political, symbolic, and identity-based articulation within a working class shaped by migration, shared experiences, and global networks in a region conceived as a capitalist frontier.
