In eukaryotic cells, autophagy is catabolic process which participates in isolate cellular components within vesicles and targeting to lysosomes for its degradation. This process plays a highly active role during erythropoiesis being responsible of eliminating non-necessary organells in the mature red blood cell. The mechanism by which autophagy is activated during erythropoiesis requires more thorough studies. In the present work we demonstrated that hemin, a physiological compound capable of stimulating erythroid maturation, may induce the stimulation of autophagy in K562 cells (CML erythroblast). Nonetheless, hemin induces mitochondrial depolarization and its subsequent engulfment by specific autophagy vesicles called autophagosomes. The relevance of this study is to give basic information regarding the aim of autophagy in cancer cells and future leukemia therapeutic outreach.
