Most of historiography on Chiquitos and the chiquitanos is about the Jesuit period, and this has implications for the image of this region and its indigenous inhabitants. Based on this diagnosis, I describe the socio-historic circumstances of this historiography, where the rescue of the Jesuit heritage, its worldwide recognition, and the implementation of socioeconomic development projects around it distort the perception that people have about the Chiquitania and the chiquitanos. A review of the highlights of indigenous political organization to claim for territories, completely omitted in the traditional and Jesuit image of the Chiquitania, allows to analyse the politic and economic reasons for the mentioned distortion.
