How does Cahiers du cinéma react to the emergence of the French New Wave? Under the direction of Éric Rohmer (who has become the chief editor since his former colleagues decided to start a career in filmmaking) the magazine strengthens the preference for clacissism and avoids any reference to modern films. Rohmer’s reluctance to engage with contemporaneity creates a source of friction within Cahiers because the majority considers that the new cinema calls for modern criticism. From the perspective of historical criticism, this article reconstructs the different stages of that conflictive transitional moment. The intention is to show that a certain notion of modern cinema and a new conception of the image emerge as a result of that controversy.
