The article aims to reconstruct and analyze the contributions of the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci at the educational level, giving an account of some of his main concepts formulated centrally in the so-called Prison Notebooks. It starts from assuming the centrality that the pedagogical and cultural dispute has for him within the framework of what he defines as hegemony, conceived as an asymmetric, dynamic and unstable field of forces that, although it involves educational institutions, far exceeds them, conditioning and structuring society as a whole and the State itself, which is defined in comprehensive terms and beyond its repressive facet. This means considering common sense as a privileged territory of hegemonic dispute and organic intellectuality as of enormous importance in this pedagogicalcultural struggle.
