Self-building has historically been questioned by hegemonic construction patterns. However, it is a central element in the social production of space for local populations that keep a direct connection with the ecosystems. Even in the face of current modernization and development processes that do not include them, these populations claim self-construction as part of their way of life and as a way of defending their territories. In this context, we propose to analyze the practices of self-construction in the islands and wetlands of Delta of Paraná River and in the semi-arid forest of Santiago del Estero, in a scenario of disputes for the social reappropriation of nature. For this purpose, from an approach based on political ecology and critical geography, a qualitative methodology will be used through the following techniques: document analysis, documenting collective initiatives, interviews with local residents and observation in both areas. The focus will be placed on: regulations, public discourses, construction processes and materials, the participants of the constructions and their relationships, the organization and management of the project, and the identification with this type of construction. Finally, the article shows how such practices are associated with the recreation of different levels of autonomy and sustainability.
