The immune system of vertebrates consists of different organs and cell types, which allow the body to distinguish self and attack the strange. The system has a high plasticity and is modulated by several factors, one of them is stress. Stress is defined as any situation able to disturb the physiological or psychological homeostasis. The stress response is then defined as allostasis, term referring to maintain stability through change. This response involves the release of a number of chemical mediators, including hormones and neurotransmitters capable of modulate the immune system. In this manuscript the fundamental aspects of the stress response and immune system with a literature summary of their interrelationships are reviewed.
