Home composting is a residential waste treatment strategy that complements municipal solid waste management. When properly designed and monitored, it produces compost suitable for horticultural and gardening uses. In 2023, ASACOMP (Argentine Composting Association) conducted a nationwide survey of 652 individuals practicing home composting. This article examines the main problems perceived by participants, which were primarily related to deficiencies in process design (site selection and type of composting system), operational practices (inadequate or absent turning, leading to the development of distinct microbial and invertebrate communities, attraction of pets and wildlife, and the generation of unpleasant odors), and insufficient compost characterization, which may limit its end use. Preliminary results showed no association between reported problems and the type of material composted. To strengthen and consolidate home composting practices, the study proposes assessing the organoleptic characteristics of both the process and the final compost, alongside targeted training and knowledge-exchange initiatives aimed at fostering a composting community.
