ro de las tres razones was a late work in the textual production of Don Juan Manuel, featuring a ternary structure that corresponds to three distinctive traits of his lineage, through an equal number of narratives. Although the work was overlooked by researchers for decades, the positioning of it as a marginal example of Castilian chronicle writing, as put forth by Leonardo Funes and María Elena Qués in the 1990s, opened up a range of research avenues that have been more literary than historical. In this paper, we reflect on this text from a historiographical perspective, for focusing on the logics of construction and validation of the medieval historical discourse, while also engaging with the theoretical contributions on genre and the horizon of expectations of the medieval text proposed by Hans Jauss. Specifically, we will examine the exemplary component of these Juanmanueline razones and their effectiveness in promoting a messianic historical interpretation of the recent past of the kingdom for the benefit of the Manuel lineage.
