An analysis of the regional geology of the Valle Calchaquí allows to restate its location in the context of the geologic provinces of northern Argentina. It is thus possible to postulate a new morphostructural province in the region. The nature and the design of the drainage pattern of the Valle Calchaquí basin allow to deduce the relative age of both eastern and western flanks, as well as the origin of the high basin and of the low basin. The genesis and the evolution of the drainage pattern are linked to the geologic constitution of the basin and to their main structural features. Moreover the geologic history of the region of the Valle Calchaquí, from the Cretaceous-Paleogene up to Neogene and Quaternary, is analyzed. A description is also made of the tectonic events that originated the successive structural inversions until reaching the current morphology. This study allows to compare the structural pattern and the regional location of the Valle Calchaquí with those of similar depressions that were formed on the western side of the Eastern Cordilleras along Northern and Central Andes.
