Certain studies on the “hegemony” in the labour area tend to explain consent through the codification of senses. This codification is understood as the arbitrary union of an unit from the plane of the expression and an unit from the plane of the content. This old idea developed from the sign theory of Ferdinand de Saussure is used to explain the hegemonic practices. But, can we speak about hegemony when we speak about codification? Should we speak about “domination” in this case? The hegemony supposes the opening or voidance of the signifier not its closure. And it is precisely its empty character what allows the articulation of different elements. The hegemony is characterized by the articulation of different elements in one. The aim of this work is strictly theoretical. We try to outline a critique of those studies that take the hegemony in the sociolabour area as a practice of codification. We propose this theoretical alternative which later can be useful for carrying out concrete analyses of hegemony and political efficiency of the empty signifier
