In this paper, we present information about the Early Ceramic or Formative (ca. 1000 B.C.- A.D. 1000) component of the Antumpa archaeological site (Humahuaca Department, Jujuy). This site is one the very few known for this temporal period in the area. Thus the information here presented contributes to deepen the available knowledge of the societies that inhabited the region during this period. In particular, we describe the research carried out in a sector that presented surface archaeological material without a clear association with well-defined architecture. This is denominated Terrace sector, due to its location on an artificially terraced surface within a large agricultural structure. Investigations in this specific sector produced various archaeological evidences, including a radiocarbon date, which are significant both to characterize the occupation history of the Antumpa site, as well as to expand the available knowledge of a crucial and little-known period of the Humahuaca Quebrada´s pre-Hispanic cultural history.
