Resumen
Bromeliads store rainwater in small natural reservoirs that create aquatic microhabitats for many organisms, including mosquitoes in their immature stages. These plants can host a wide variety of mosquito species, some of ecological importance and others relevant to public health because they may act as disease vectors. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between mosquito communities and bromeliad species in the Yungas forests of northwestern Argentina. We found that these communities are ecologically complex and include both widespread species and others with more restricted distributions. Mosquito communities differed not only in the number and abundance of species but also in how species shared and used bromeliad microhabitats. Our findings improve understanding of mosquito diversity and ecology in natural plant-associated habitats and provide useful information for future studies in environments with different levels of conservation and environmental change.
