Raphanus sativus L. (radish) is a common weed in the agricultural systems ofthePampas region that has developed resistance to acetohydroxyacid synthase inhibitor herbicides. An indehiscent fruit (pod) is the radish dispersion unit, and the maternal pericarp could affect its seeds germination. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the pericarp on seedgermination of. Germination of isolated seeds and intact podsof two biotypes of radish were evaluated in tures, underlight (12h) and darkness conditions. Scarified pods, whole podsand isolated seeds were used to evaluate the possible chemical vs. mechanical role of pericarp on seed germination. Finally, the moisture contents of isolated seeds and seeds whole pods were determined in ten moments up to 12 days post-imbibition. Seed germination of both biotypes of radish was affected by the light, temperature, storage time and pericarp. Light and pericarp significantly reduced germination, while seed germination ofscarified pods did not differ from isolated seeds, suggesting that the inhibitory effects on seed germination would be produced by mechanical restriction of the expansion of the embryo. In addition, the he amount of absorbed water bythe seeds. It is concluded that the pericarp plays animportant role on seed germination of R. sativus and it would have the potential to stagger germination during a longer period of time. The study of thepericarp allow advancing in the knowledge of the role of pericarp onseed germination of radish.
