From its remote origins, the salesian congregation has directed its missionary efforts to children, following in Patagonia the methodology previously applied in Italy with marginal children. In this paper I analyze the contemporary interpellations salesian institutions address to mapuche children, which match the identity articulation between being catholic, neuquino, argentinian, and nonpolitically mapuche that is hegemonic in Neuquén province. I point out the connection between such messages and the salesian congregation’s historical mission, attending also the ways in which children themselves interpret and influence on their own experiences in this net of catholic institutions. I also introduce the counterproposal evangelical churches offer in a very antique mapuche community located at the south of the province, focusing on the definitions by which they discuss the mentioned syncretism and, through religion, dispute with the catholic church over the definition of these children’s identity. All along, I consider the reappropriations and fissures produced by the mapuche children and adolescents interpelled on a daily basis by these diverse and competing churches.
