The article examines how the visibility of shocking criminal cases was constructed in nationally circulated Argentine newspapers during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983). From a qualitative approach, it combines tools from sociosemiotics and enunciation theory to analyze, at thematic, rhetorical, and enunciative levels, the crime coverage of Clarín, La Nación, Crónica, and Diario Popular, focusing on high-impact media crimes. The findings show that the press not only reports events but also produces regimes of selective visibility that intensify certain forms of violence while displacing others, particularly state violence, whose extreme intensity during the early years of the regime (1976-1978) is later progressively removed from the media space, without implying its disappearance. In this sense, crime news organizes what can be said and thought and contributes to the shaping of punitive sensibilities. Finally, the study opens questions for a connected history reading of the ways violence is narrated in authoritarian contexts.
