In this work the activity of color removal from aqueous dyed solutions using nanoparticulate solids was explored: the Mn-MAG ferrite, being MAG magnetite, HEM-Mn-MAG (with 0.74% w/w of Hematin immobilized on the ferrite by coupling with glutaraldehyde) and CITMD5. This is a nanoparticle fluid of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) of concentration 10 g/L and an approximate particle size of 9 nm. Orange II (N-II) and Alizarin S (or RAS) were used as colorants. Azo dyes such as N-II are more resistant than anthraquinones like RAS to oxidative removal. CITMD5 was very effective removing low concentrations of RAS. The results demonstrated the ability of HEM-Mn-MAG to completely decolorize a solution with 62.5 mg /L of N-II at pH 11 while CITMD5 reached half of that conversion for the same conditions. The best results for color removal in solutions mixtures of N-II and RAS were obtained with Hem-Mn-MAG. Mn-MAG is not active to remove N-II.
