This paper aims to discuss the selection and hierarchization of the contributions of the past works made by the undergraduate History of Economic Thought textbooks. To this end, first of all, it is made a review of the main controversies that took place within the Historiography of Modern Thought in relation to the criteria for the interpretation of the works of past authors. Secondly, through the development of the notions of exegesis and eisegesis, it is debated in what sense the criterion of interpretation of past authors is not only a theoretical problem that concerns Hermeneutics and other related disciplines, but also has full importance in the practice associated with the undergraduate study and teaching of the History of Economic Thought. Thirdly, as a case of study, it is explored how the previous discussion impacts on the understanding of the selection and hierarchization of the contributions of Adam Smith's work made by the History of Economic Thought textbooks. In the end, some reflections on the pedagogy of this conceptual field are presented.
