According to recent studies about the vitality of corporativism and the validity of the jurisdictional culture until the end of the Ancien Régime, this work analyzes the tension of powers between municipal judges (who were representatives of the city) and royal judges (representatives of the Crown) in a peripheral city of the Spanish Monarchy. The study of the government institutions of Mendoza in the 18th century – when this city changed of jurisdiction from Capitanía of Chile to Vicerroyalty of Río de la Platacollaborates, from the new approaches, with the knowledge of the behaviors of the municipal elites in their relations with the Crown officials. It also contributes to the analysis of the processes by which cabildos were vigorous institutions at the revolutionary times.
