The article analyzes the evolution of the party system in Argentina between 1983 and 2025. It revisits the notion of competitive structure and operationalizes it as alternation, formula of government, and access to the executive branch. Based on a longitudinal study that combines contributions from previous studies, electoral data, institutional indicators, and indices on ideologization and polarization, four major configurations are identified: bipartisanship, moderate multipartyism, asymmetric multipartyism, and bicollateralism. The analysis shows that social, economic, and political crises do not imply a permanent collapse of the party system, but rather cycles of opening and closing under stable electoral rules.
