The article uses the notion of political system to explain the leadership exercised by Mariano Iturbe in the province of Jujuy between 1835 and 1852. The character is relevant given that he served as governor between 1838-1840, 1841-1849 and 1850-1852. The network of links through which he accessed and remained in power is reconstructed, as well as the ways he used to resolve conflictive instances in a context marked by factionality. We chose to examine some artists of the “sistema Iturbe” such as their relationships with the local leadership, the ties woven with certain authorities of the provincial interior and connections with interprovincial leaders, including the governor of Buenos Aires Juan Manuel de Rosas in charge of confederal foreign relations. The argument we maintain is that the “sistema Iturbe” allowed Jujuy to be positioned in the Rosas Confederation and guarantee provincial governability due to the way in which political dissidence was managed.
