Based on ethnographic research carried out during the period 2009-2016 with mothers living in Buenos Aires, this text describes and analyzes the relationship between care, punishment and violence present in the daily routine of maternity care. I argue that certain actions that constitute forms of violence are standardized resources available to mothers’ care and attention tending to provide well being of their children. The generic and moral norms of maternal love allow these actions of violence when they are framed within the imperative of “need” and risks for their own child and not with other mothers children. Furthermore, I argue that poor and vulnerable mothers’ actions of care and protection take place within local contexts and rationalities where different types of violence are present, including those exerted by the State and its bureaucracies.
