In a context of record increases in temperatures and emissions in cities, where the residential sector is the largest consumer of building energy, there is an urgent need to implement sustainable housing policies, especially in locations with favorable solar resources. Using a mixed methodology and participatory techniques for educational purposes, this paper presents the progress of a research project aimed at providing practical training to advanced architecture students in the incorporation of solar photovoltaic and thermal technologies in social housing, developed in the Metropolitan Area of San Juan, Argentina. In workshops based on project-based learning, technical, regulatory, and design aspects for integrating solar systems as contributions to social architecture are addressed. It is concluded that the proposal raises the importance of rethinking architectural design to benefit energy independence and sustainability, achieving reductions of 2068 kgCO2 /house/year.
