The Gonopterodendron sarmientoi Lorentz ex Griseb (palo santo) is a species of great timber value and international importance, endemic to the Chaco Region and that can be found in Southwest Brazil, Southeast Bolivia, West Paraguay and Northwest Argentina. The Palo Santo is listed in the Appendix II of the International Convention of Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The study aims to determine the cutting cycles of the species that will allow for adequate silvicultural management and legal fulfilment by exploring potential sapwood/heartwood relationships in terms of age in addition to locate the best timber area, establish its cutting cycles and the time it takes to reach them (rotation time). The study was carried out in the locations of Rivadavia (Salta), Las Hacheras (Chaco), and Ingeniero Guillermo N. Juarez and Las Lomitas (two strategic points of Formosa). The samples were selected by age ranges that were the same or close to each other so that sites could be compared including the influence of precipitation. It was concluded that Las Hacheras (Chaco) is the location at which growth and timber production were the most favorable.
