In 2001, the cartonero became a distinctive character of the landscape of the Argentinean crisis. Some narrative, César Aira’s La villa (2001) highlights other dimensions of this figure: cooperativism, resourcefulness. As part of a reflection on the limits of realism, Aira’s novel is not the mirror of the crisis, but an exhibition device to show zones and mechanisms of precariousness’s visibilization and invisibilization. It is also a reflection on the ways in which art intervenes, through aesthetic «action» in the distribution of the inequality. This paper connects these considerations with the one that emerges from Retratos do lixo (2008), by the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. It is a series of images that exceed the photographic realm andis already a work withtransmediality that includes photography, collage, installation. In the displacement between media and materials, but also between literature and image, art and activism, this paper explores the rhetoric, poetics- and interventions mobilized by residuality in the new millennium.
