To what extent does Hobbes’ definition of freedom as absence of opposition or obstacles, so innovative in his time, still apply to contemporary politics? To approach this question, first, we present the distinction between positive, negative and republican freedom. Then, we show how Hobbes separates freedom from republicanism, by contextualizing his ideas within the intellectual debates of the 18th century. We reach the conclusion that Hobbesian freedom is neither solipsistic nor voluntaristic, unlike the freedom postulated by contemporary libertarianism.
