This article explores the relationship between people and their homes by reconstructing how middle-class youth interpret the process of self-construction using unconventional materials. Through the association of actions, practices, and body parts with the house, individuals express a particular relationship with their inhabited space and define a way of living. Using an ethnographic approach, the fieldwork is based on in-depth interviews and participant observation conducted between 2023 and 2025 in the Paseo Costanero Sur of Mar del Plata (Argentina), an area of urban expansion where bioconstruction projects, community housing developments, and informal forms of land access converge. The article focuses on the ways in which self-construction and the use of unconventional materials are argued for and justified. As we observe, these practices are not merely a housing strategy, rather they operate as symbolic and moral devices that allow for the hierarchization of practices, the legitimization of the appropriation of urban space, and the differentiation from other urbanization processes. Addressing these arguments and assessments allows us to understand the current urbanization process in an expansion zone and the housing trajectories of these social sectors, in a context of economic crisis and the deepening of an exclusionary urbanization model.
