Faced with the growth of studies on cultural consumption, it is essential to review, question and update the dominant analytical models. In the last decades the fundamental contribution of Pierre Bourdieu has been the object of a series of critical readings that somehow allow to carry out that task. This article intends to point out some limitations of Bourdieu’s approach, to highlight the relevance of some recent contributions and to consider new factors that —at least potentially— redefine cultural consumption as object of study. If the object has changed, it follows, the conceptual and theoretical tools used to grasp it should also be changed.
