The present work shows the first advances in the project "Diseño y fabricación asistidos por computadora de ortesis y prótesis de miembro inferior", which is carried out in association with the Servicio de Rehabilitación (SR) of the Hospital Lencinas at Mendoza-Argentina. The initial objective was to design an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) to correct forefoot drop. The requirements were the following: (1) assured manufacturing with the resources available in the SR, (2) low cost, (3) short manufacturing times, and (4) verifiable effectiveness in patients. To achieve the first three goals, a design was proposed that combines 3D printed plastic parts with a novel spring made of hardened steel. Thus, an optimal balance was achieved between the ergonomics that can be obtained from 3D printed parts, the mechanical properties necessary for the functionality of the orthopedic element and the manufacturing process. The structural design of the AFO was also aided with simulations using the Finite Element Method. Finally, a method for the objective evaluation of the effectiveness of the designed AFO was proposed and executed, from the automatic analysis of videos of patients’ gait with and without the AFO.
