The aim of this study is to describe the choice of preposition (a or en) that appears with directional verbs in the grammar of Paraguayan immigrant adults and to examine how these constructions are acquired by their children. To achieve these goals, we analyze the spontaneous production of six mother-child pairs that are part of ARPAR contact (Schmitt et al.), an original corpus of Spanish spoken by Paraguayan migrants living in Argentina. Production of locative complements and adjuncts was recorded with four types of verbs (movement, activity, stative and directional verbs) and a binomial test was carried out to examine preference in the choice of preposition. Results showed variability only with directional verbs. Children were observed to choose the option present in the input they received from their parents as long as it was consistent. It is concluded that the locative complement of Spanish directional verbs provides a favourable locus for ambiguity, which allows variation to arise.
