This article provides a systematization of the Foucauldian literature on studies of neoliberal governmentality. The attention is focused on reviewing one of the most outstanding mutations that neoliberalism prints in liberal democracy: the configuration of the subjectivity of the “entrepreneur”, a new homo economicus. Consequently, these pages aim to provide readers with a map of the theoretical contributions made by the most contemporary Foucauldian scholars on the issue, to understand the relationship between biopower and neoliberal governmentality. This leads to examine a reformulation of the notion of freedom. Immersed in the grid of intelligibility of the marketplace, the homo economicus of neoliberalism accounts for the economization of multiple spheres of life. The text offers a final comment on successive mutations propelled by neoliberalism against liberal democracy, which are currently articulated with the emergence of neo-authoritarian political projects.
