The main unconformities recognized in the Neuquén basin during the Upper Jurassic and the Cretaceous are characterized in this paper, making reference to their stratigraphic position and age. These unconformities are the following: Araucanican (Intramalmican), Catanlilican (Intravalanginian), Coihuequican (Intrahauterivian), Initial Miranican (Intrabarremian), Intermediate Miranican (Intraaptian), Main Miranican (Intracretaceus) and Huantraiquican (Intracampanian). They reflect successive displacements of the coastline as a result of the transgression (retrogradation) - regression (progradation) phenomena, which are controlled by the relative rhythmus of subsidence, eustacy and sedimentation. The identification of these main unconformities, and their location in space and time, facilitates the ordaining and correlation of the mapping units, allowing to establish with a better precision the tectosedimentary evolution of the Neuquén basin at the considered interval.
