The Integrated Initiative for the Prevention and Control of dengue and other Aedes aegypti borne arbovirus, a technical document published by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), was adopted by Member States as a reference in the Region of the Americas to develop and strengthen national strategies for the prevention and control of arboviral infections. However, in the Americas and especially in Southern Cone countries, the impact of dengue in the 2024 season has shown, according to PAHO, a remarkable increase of 209% in cases when compared to 2023. In Argentina, since the re-emergence of dengue in 1996, there have been several epidemic seasons, especially in 2009, 2016, 2020, 2023, 2024, with sustained and significant increases in the number of cases during the whole period. Given this epidemiological context of dengue and other arboviruses, the question arises: how can the next dengue outbreak be stopped? To outline an answer, in this article we are interested in contrasting the recent public policies agreed by the Federal Health Council of Argentina, and the recommendations proposed by the Ministry of Health of Brazil in the National Contingency Plan for Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. On the other hand, we emphasize the need to promote operational research and innovative developments in our country, based on a regional approach and articulating the scientific and technical research system with national public health areas and municipal governments to evaluate other innovative control tools.
