The aim of this article is to review the idea of Machiavellianism, as presented by Claude Lefort, and to link it to the idea of populism. To do so, it takes up Lefort's definition of imaginary, defined as a collective representation that produces and masks modern social division, and argues that it can be assimilated to the distortion that populism provokes on liberal constitutional democracy. The text analyses Machiavellianism and populism as imaginaries that imply a mastery of one's conduct, that call into question the principle of the ordering of community life, and that produce and mask the division of the social.
