The aim of this article is to present a systematization of the ways in which Latin American academy have conceptualized the use and appropriation of digital technologies by fandoms or fan communities. The main purpose is to advance with the consolidation of fan studies, which are still nascent aroubd these parts, by focusing on one of the dimensions of fandom as a social pehemonen that has received the most attention: that is, its links with social media and the digitalization of both media content and consumption practices. Not only we will cover the most recurrent central terms and theoretical orientations when analyzing the dynamics that permeate digital relationships within fandoms, among peers and with the objects that constitute them, but we will also problematize their heuristic potentialities and limitations for understanding fandom in its full complexity. The arguments presented here are based on the need for a dialogue between fan studies and popular culture studies, together with the forms that mass culture and digital culture take in contemporary societies.
