In semiarid regions crop response to fertilization is depending on nitrogen availability and water dynamic. Previous crop can influence available water and mineralization- immobilization processes. The objectives of this work were: to evaluate the effect of the previous crop on the Nitrogen (N) and Sulphur (S) fertilization, the nutritional balance and wheat productivity, to compare the N use efficiency on different crop managements. Two wheat fertilization (N and S) trials were made on an irrigated corn (MR) and rainfed wheat (TS) fields. Differences in total dry matter (MS) production between trials decreased with N application and with time. The lowest difference was obtained with 100 kg de N ha-1 during elongation and at physiological maturity with 66 for grain production and 76 kg de N ha-1 for MS. The effect of S application (from 0 to 24 kg S ha-1) was different between trials. Crop production response was the highest with 6 (MR) and 12 (TS) kg of S ha-1, according to the S availability at seeding time. The DRIS index showed that N and S were the most deficient nutrients. These results showed the DRIS sensibility to detect wheat nutrition under different situations and crop nutritional status. Differences in residue quality and quantity modified soil particulate organic matter level and N dynamic of crop uptake. Highest N application under abundant crop residue stimulated N mineralization from particulate organic matter.
