Crop sequence intensification through the inclusion of winter cover crops in the Pampas region is an interesting agricultural practice with the potential to partially counteract the effects of soil physical degradation, even in the short-term. This practice improves soil structure by increasing macroporosity but it can also affect the orientation of these pores, inducing a preferential movement of water. The objectives of this research were: i) to study the short-term effect of different cover crops on capacity and intensity indicators of soil physical quality, obtained with laboratory and field methods, and ii) to study the effect of different cover crops on the anisotropic behavior of soil hydraulic properties as compared with bare fallow plots. The trial included six treatments: a control treatment without cover crop (bare fallow) and five types of cover crops. Static indicators derived from the water retention curve, as well as dynamic indicators based on mini-infiltration under laboratory conditions and field infiltration were determined. The combination of vetch (Vicia villosa L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) as cover crop modified capacity indicators during the first year decreasing bulk density and increasing the amount of storage pores. Cover crops tend to generate a more isotropic behavior of hydraulic conductivity. Laboratory methods were more sensitive than field methods in detecting differences among treatments than field methods in hydraulic conductivity. The incorporation of cover crops can change an anisotropic behavior into a more isotropic behavior of hydraulic properties in the short-term, compared to bare fallow plots. Cover crops modifications of soil physical properties tend to be species dependent.
