Throughout time, the mountains occupied a prominent place in the religiosity of the Andean populations, which certainly has to do with their omnipresence and their influence on the lifestyles and economies of the communities. This paper has the dual purpose of defining, from the examination of colonial ecclesiastical sources, some general aspects of pre-Hispanic mountain cults (2nd millennium CE), and then exploring the way in which these were expressed materially and evolved over time in the central part of the Bolivian Andes. The analysis will focus on the ruptures, transformations, and continuities of these cults after the enforcement of the colonial regime and Christianity.
