Phytoremediation involves the destruction, inactivation or stabilization of contaminants (e.g. heavy metals) by plants –and microorganisms associated with their roots–, and allows to improving soil quality. The ability of Lotus tenuis Waldst. & Kit. to absorb metals and associate with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and native rhizobia from soils of the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin was studied. L. tenuis plants were grown in a greenhouse on riparian soils of Gral. Las Heras (S1), Marcos Paz (S2) and Avellaneda (S3) for 50 days. Fertility, total metals (ME-T) and soil spore density (SD) were quantified pre-sowing and at plant harvest. Shoot and root biomass, photosynthetic pigments, Cu, Cr, and Zn in shoot and root, AMF colonization, and root nodulation were measured. Metal translocation (TF) and bioconcentration (BCF) factors were calculated. Available phosphorus increased from S1 to S3 and decreased in S2 and S3 after harvest. ME-T and ME-DTPA were higher in S3 than in S1 and S2; they did not differ at harvest time. The SD decreased from S1 to S3. Biomass increased and pigments decreased from S1 to S3. AMF colonization did not significantly differ among sites. The number of nodules g-1 radical fresh weight was 9.7 in S1, 67.6 in S2 and 41.8 in S3. In general, the metal concentration was higher in roots than in shoots and the BCF decreased from S1 to S3. Faced with edaphic contamination by Cu, Cr and Zn, the strategy of L. tenuis would consist of regulating the translocation of metals towards the shoot. The contamination would not affect the symbiosis with rhizobia and AMF. Thus, the cultivation of L. tenuis would allow the conservation of the native microbiota, favoring the subsequent implantation of other species in riparian soils.
