The Provincial Route 173 that runs through the Atuel canyon has in the austral beginning a landslide that affects the areaof snails developed into a massif rock composed by alternatingcompetent sandstones and pelitic banks Carboniferous withlow resistance. The continuous movement of the critical mass is caused bylandslide of circular breakage, generating intense deformation degree of tension cracks and secondary scarps that can be observed both in the road trace after each rain and on the talusesinvolved. The landslide has a maximum length of 210 m NNW to SSE direction with an average width of 80 m and was generated bymultiple and successive events, while the distribution of activity is clearly confined and elongated in SSE direction. The volumeof the unstable mass is approximately 63,500 m3and the safety factor of the unstable surface generated from residual slidinganalysis by the method of Bishop and Janbu simplified gave a value of "0.9".Repeated landslides recorded in the trace of road, usually related to summer rainfall, affecting the transit linked to tourism inthe region and those involved in hydroelectric power plants on the river Atuel. The area of study is in constant instability with ahigh risk of falling from the hillside where the road is.
