Academic engagement is a complex construct that depends on a number of variables and cannot be reduced to mere participation in educational activities. It is therefore not easy to define. Its origin can be traced back to studies on learner dropout and school retention and, more immediately, to Astin s 1984 definition of involvement. The present essay has two broad objectives. On the one hand, it provides an overview of the study o f academic commitment and establishes links between this construct and self-regulated learning; and, on the other, it proposes some educational guidelines to suggest ways of encouraging university student engagement.
