The aims of this study were: a) to assess eating behaviors, specific cognitions related to eating disorders (ED) and core beliefs in adolescents on the basis of self-reports and interviews in order to detect probable cases and evaluate ED, and b) to compare these variables by risk groups. The sample was composed of 759 students of middle high schools of Buenos Aires city (43% men and 57% women). The instruments used were: sociodemographic and eating related data, the ICA inventory, the MAC-R questionnaire, the SQ schema questionnaire, the Rosenberg scale, the Beck-II inventory and a semi-structured interview. In the first phase, 14% of women and 11% of men showed symptoms of ED risk , whereas in the interview phase only 4.08% of the sample met criteria for ED (6.79% of women and 1.28% of males). The group of students selected as at risk and those who were effectively confirmed cases showed similar and more severe eating behaviors, specific cognitions and core beliefs than those students without significant symptoms. ED confirmed cases had higher severity of compensatory behaviors, depression and belief of abandonment.
