The issue of the teaching the history of psychology is part of discussions both in the fields of teaching of psychology and of training and education of psychologists. In this context, and as a continuation of a previous study on the teaching of history of psychology in Argentina, this study intends to survey arguments about the role, function and curricular sense of the history of psychology in the pre-graduate education of Ibero-American psychologists and to compare them to those that correspond to the Anglo-Saxon tradition. This knowledge is considered as a requisite for justifying the history courses in psychology’s disciplinary training, for encouraging learning and for promoting attitudes and dispositions towards students’ critical thinking. Having surveyed, classified and analyzed the existing information regarding the analyses about history of psychology courses in the mentioned regions, it is concluded that there are diverse reasons for teaching history to psychologists. Whereas Ibero-American authors seemingly priorize cognitive reasons such as critical, non dogmatical thinking, Anglo-Saxon authors emphasize the role of the history of psychology as a meeting context for students and future graduates in front of the progressive extension, specialization and fragmentation of the discipline.
