The story of Cumbay, a Chiriguano chief who was a great indigenous leader of the Ingre valley, was carefully written by the French historian Thierry Saignes. Our intention here is to add to that story with some historical data on the armistice and war periods of 1806-1807. On the one hand, we analyze the tensions between different indigenous captains of the Chiriguano foothills, some of which favored peace and some of which favored war. We will try to nuance Saignes interpretation of Cumbay's leadership, based on Clastres' theories, by focusing on his interactions with other captains and on his ability to maintain a delicate balance of power between both internal and external pressures. On the other hand, we show Cumbay's several strategies while facing Bourbon Spain's territorial expansionism, combining peace treatiesand military conflict dimension
