Abstract

In this work the representations of the city in La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla will be addressed. According to Ángel Rama's (1984) proposal on urban space, in the colonial era, the organization of the city sought to represent the social and political order. In this context, we are interested in analyzing how these images of urban space are articulated with the idea of order, from an imperial perspective, that is, from the point of view of the Spanish. Starting from the idea that the American epic seeks to illustrate the transformation of space, tensioned between the border and the city (FIRBAS, 2008), we understand that these images of the city, especially in the first part of the epic poem, have the function of showing the defeat of the Spanish against the Araucanians.
