The mechanical behavior of protective barriers vehicles built with High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (HPFRC) against impact is numerically studied in this paper. The final objective of the research is the comparison of their performance with that of conventional concrete barriers and to bring recommendations for their design. HPFRC appears as an alternative for this type of construction because it combines high resistance to static and dynamic loads with low porosity, which gives great improvements in durability. The addition of ductile and high strength fibers allows reducing the brittle nature of concrete and leads to a remarkable increase in energy absorption capacity. First, the reinforcement of the barrier is dimensioned for different material alternatives. Then, a material model is calibrated by laboratory tests to adequately represent the behavior of HPFRC under static and dynamic loads. Finally, the impact of a vehicle on the barriers is numerically simulated. The numerical results allow to obtain conclusions regarding the better performance of the HPFRC barriers with respect to the conventional one.
